Winchester Model 1873 First Year Very Rare 22 Short Take Down Rifle ITEM 3244

Item Number 3244 Category

This Winchester was produced in the first year of production for the 22 rim fire models, 1884. The rifle’s serial number is 160002. This rifle has the round 24 inch barrel chambered for the 22 short. The bore is in poor condition. This rifle has the rare take down feature. To dismantle the rifle, you tap out the retaining tapered pin that protrudes on the receiver side below where the barrel would line up. This was not a reliable system and Winchester decided to peen the pins on the remaining receivers that were still in production to prevent the guns from being dismantled. Very few of these take downs were shipped without the peened pins before the decision to discontinue that take down feature. This rifle is in patina condition. The sights appear to be original to this gun. The top of the barrel by the breech is marked 22 Cal. The brass carrier block is also marked 22 Cal. Short. The action works good. The extractor does not have the top hook to pull the dust cover back. The top of the receiver on the right side has a dent. The dust cover works fine manually. The stock and forend have no cracks or wood damage. This is a rare Winchester 1873 model with the operational take down feature, This rifle is a good example of these early 22 take down models.
